Book Summary

The book is told from the perspective of Anke, a teenage girl that witnesses her father abuse her brother, sister and mother everyday, but not her. Even though she knows she should feel happy about not being abused, she feels worthless and that her father doesn't love her enough to give enough attention to abuse her. Life outside of her house includes her being on the volleyball team, which her father disapproves of, saying that competition is bad for young girls. Despite this she works hard on the team with her friend Rona, who has an alcoholic father, and a tough exterior. Anke is forced by her mother every Sunday to hang out with a shy girl named Angeline, who lives with her mother. Angeline's father having had run off with a secretary. Anke thinks it's childish that Angeline believes one day her father with return to them. One of Anke's closest friends in a senior boy named Jed, who she hangs out with after school. They kiss and take naps together on his couch, but they are just friends. Kyler is a boy on the soccer team that Anke was a crush on.
