The book is formatted like a poem, and goes from using full sentences to using fragments through out. This gives it a nice flow and makes it fun to read.
"When he turns to me,
the heat I'm just discovering
screams,
"MY BALL!"
Hair on my arms
stands up
and about bursts into flames."
The words flow into a powerful message of how Anke feels during volleyball practice when the coach has everyone on the team shout this. It shows how passionate Anke is, not only about volleyball, but herself, her want to be free and independent. She's strong willed and can show her true voice through volleyball.
"Cyclone father
towers above her,
sucking papers off the counter,
hand raised with thunderbolts,
Yaicha crouching
on flowered linoleum"
This is an amazing description on how Anke's father abuses her sister Yaicha. Yaicha is taking the abuse and cowering on the floor, not fighting back. This also confirms Anke's place as just an onlooker who tries to ignore what goes on, as she just watches and does nothing. This can also show how much she fears to try and help, afraid he might beat her too.
